INSPECTEUR LAVERGNE PEONY
Paeonia 'Inspecteur Lavergne' is a sophisticated French heirloom herbaceous peony, introduced in 1924, that is prized for its consistent performance and rich, jewel-toned color. This mid-to-late season bloomer produces large, double flowers in a deep crimson-red with a distinctive metallic or silvery sheen on the edges of the inner ruffled petals. The blooms are symmetrical and globe-shaped, reaching about 5 to 6 inches in diameter, and emit a light, pleasant fragrance. Reaching a height of approximately 18 to 24 inches, it features particularly sturdy, reddish stems and lush, dark green foliage that provides a dense, ornamental backdrop for the garden long after the flowers have faded.
To ensure 'Inspecteur Lavergne' develops its signature deep red hue, it should be planted in a location that receives full sun, as at least six to eight hours of direct light are required for the plant to produce its heavy, multi-petaled flowers. It thrives in rich, fertile, well-drained soil; like most peonies, it is a "heavy feeder" that benefits from a top-dressing of compost or a balanced fertilizer in early spring as the red shoots first emerge.
When planting, it is critical to position the "eyes" or buds no deeper than 1 to 2 inches below the soil surface to guarantee future flowering.
