Zone: 3OSTRICH FERN
Matteuccia struthiopteris is a stately North American native prized for its architectural grandeur and feathery, vibrant green plumes. The sterile fronds emerge as tightly curled "fiddleheads" - a seasonal delicacy - before unfurling into massive, deeply divided leaves that can reach heights of 3 to 4 feet. These fronds grow in a perfect vase-like arrangement from a central crown, providing a lush, forest-floor aesthetic that is ideal for large-scale shade gardens or naturalized woodland settings.
Matteuccia struthiopteris is exceptionally vigorous and spreads via underground runners to form dense colonies, making it a "workhorse" for filling expansive areas or stabilizing moist slopes. It thrives in partial to full shade and demands consistently moist, humus-rich soil, though it can even tolerate seasonally wet or boggy conditions. While the green foliage withers after the first hard frost, it produces separate, stiff, dark-brown fertile fronds in the center of the clump that remain standing throughout the winter, offering striking structural interest against the snow.

To help Matteuccia struthiopteris settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in rich, moisture-retentive soil that stays consistently damp. Ostrich Ferns thrive in areas where other plants might struggle with too much moisture. Provide a location with partial to full shade. In early spring, clear away dead or damaged fronds to make room for the new spring growth. Mulch well to keep the roots cool and the soil moist.
