SUNFLARE JAPANESE FOREST GRASS
Hakonechloa macra 'Sunflare', a vibrant sport of 'All Gold', is a high-impact deciduous grass that brings a sophisticated color gradient to the shade garden. It forms a lush, cascading mound of bamboo-like foliage that typically reaches 12 to 15 inches in height and 18-24 inches in width. While it emerges as a brilliant, glowing chartreuse-yellow, the most distinctive feature of 'Sunflare' is the deep burgundy-red tips that develop as the season progresses, especially in areas with a bit of filtered sunlight. This unique "sun-kissed" effect provides a fiery contrast to the neon foliage, making it a standout specimen for containers or for illuminating dark garden borders with a touch of warmth.
Caring for 'Sunflare' is very manageable, provided it is given the "cool and moist" conditions that all Japanese Forest Grasses crave. It performs best in partial shade; while a small amount of morning sun or dappled light is necessary to trigger the intense red tips, harsh afternoon sun can easily scorch the delicate yellow blades. It thrives in rich, organic, and consistently moist soil and should not be allowed to dry out completely, though it requires good drainage to avoid root issues. Because it is deciduous, the foliage will turn a warm tan and die back in late autumn. Maintenance is as simple as cutting the dead blades to the ground in late winter or early spring before the fresh, golden-red shoots begin to emerge.
