BLUE FESCUE GRASS
Festuca glauca 'Elijah Blue', commonly known as Elijah Blue Fescue, is one of the most popular and vibrant of the ornamental blue fescues. This cool-season grass forms a tidy, spherical mound of very fine, needle-like blades that maintain a striking soft powdery-blue color throughout the year. Reaching a compact height and width of only 9 to 12 inches, it is a great choice for rock gardens, modern geometric plantings, or as a cooling edge for sunny pathways. In early summer, it produces thin, upright flower spikes that emerge wheat-colored and eventually fade to a light tan, though many gardeners prefer to snip these off to keep the focus on the dense, colorful tuft of foliage.
Caring for 'Elijah Blue' is remarkably easy, provided it is given the "lean and dry" conditions it craves. It performs best in full sun, which ensures the blue intensity of the blades remains vivid; in too much shade, the plant may turn a duller green and lose its tight, mounded shape. This grass requires well-drained soil and is highly drought-tolerant once established, making it a perfect candidate for xeriscaping or sandy coastal areas.

To help Festuca settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in full sun in lean, sharply well-draining soil. Festuca varieties are cool-season, clumping grasses that are highly sensitive to soil moisture; avoid heavy, wet, or overly rich garden soils, as these will cause the crown to rot. Excellent drainage is essential to maintaining their signature blue foliage color. In early spring, use a hand rake to gently 'comb' out dead foliage from the clumps. Avoid cutting them to the ground like larger grasses, as they do not regenerate well from hard pruning.
