EUROPEAN BEECH
Fagus sylvatica, commonly known as the European Beech is a large deciduous, low-branched tree that has a dense, upright to rounded spreading crown. The European Beech is distinguished from the similar American Beech (Fagus grandifolia) by its smaller size and darker gray bark. Its leaves are also shorter and have wavy, untoothed margin. Its leaves are ovate to elliptic and dark green that mature to golden bronze in fall. Yellowish green flower clusters appear in April and May that give way to Beechnuts enclosed in spiny bracts. Beechnuts ripen in fall and are edible.
