Ophiopogon japonicus, commonly known as mondo grass or monkey grass, is a tough, versatile evergreen groundcover valued for its dense, fountain-like tufts of dark green, ribbon-like foliage. Though it resembles a true grass, this resilient member of the asparagus family spreads gradually via underground rhizomes to form a solid, weed-suppressing carpet that stays attractive year-round. Small, pale lavender to white flowers appear hidden among the leaves in mid-summer, giving way to striking, bead-like metallic blue berries in autumn. Its fine texture and arching form make it ideal for softening paved walkways, edging garden beds, massing on shaded slopes, or filling spaces between stepping stones where lawn grasses fail to thrive.

Ophiopogon japonicus prefers partial to full shade, though it can tolerate full morning sun in cooler climates if given adequate moisture. It performs best in fertile, organically rich, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. While it appreciates regular watering while getting established, mature clumps demonstrate impressive drought tolerance and require minimal maintenance. The ideal spot for Dwarf Mondo Grass is a shaded to partially shaded location in the landscape, particularly under tree canopies, along shaded borders, or in woodland gardens where turfgrass struggles to grow.
