JAPANESE SILVER GRASS -
3-4 Feet Tall 2-3 Feet Wide--
Miscanthus sinensis 'Purpurascens', commonly known as Flame Grass, is a standout ornamental grass celebrated for having arguably the best autumn color of the entire species. While it begins the season with an upright habit and grayish-green blades, it doesn't stay that way for long. By mid-summer, its foliage begins to take on a distinctive reddish-purple tint. As autumn arrives, Flame Grass earns its name, erupting into a brilliant fiery orange-red that persists for weeks. It is slightly more compact than the classic 'Gracillimus', typically reaching 3 to 4 feet tall (about 5 feet when in bloom), making it a perfect mid-sized focal point.
Caring for Flame Grass is very straightforward, as it is one of the hardier and more cold-tolerant Miscanthus varieties. It performs most brilliantly in full sun, which is absolutely essential for achieving those intense "flame" colors in the fall; in shade, it will remain mostly green and may become floppy. It is drought-tolerant once established and thrives in a wide range of soil types, including heavy clay, as long as it isn't sitting in a boggy area. In late summer, it produces creamy-white flower plumes that contrast sharply against the darkening foliage. Maintenance is easy: in late winter or very early spring, cut the entire clump back to about 4-6 inches from the ground to make room for fresh spring growth.
