The Lobelia cardinalis, commonly known as Cardinal Flower, is a stunning native herbaceous perennial prized for its dramatic, brilliant red flower spikes that bloom profusely from mid-summer into early fall. Rising from a rosette of dark green, lance-shaped leaves, the sturdy, erect stems can reach heights of 2 to 3 feet. The tubular, scarlet-red flowers are a favorite of hummingbirds, which are its primary pollinators, and also attract butterflies. While the classic color is cardinal red (giving the plant its common name), white and rose-colored forms also exist. Its dramatic late-season color makes it an excellent choice for borders, rain gardens, and naturalized areas, especially near water features.
Cardinal Flower thrives in full sun or partial shade in rich, evenly moist, well-drained soil. It tolerates brief periods of flooding, making it perfect for boggy areas or stream banks. While it can handle full sun in cooler climates, it generally performs best in part shade, especially in regions with hot summers where afternoon shade is appreciated. Note that all parts of the plant are considered toxic if ingested.
