Iris ensata 'Variegata' is a popular and award-winning Japanese Iris cultivar, highly prized for its exceptional, year-round ornamental foliage, often referred to as 'Silverband' or Variegated Japanese Iris. Unlike many flowering plants where the bloom is the primary attraction, 'Variegata's most distinguishing feature is its broad, stiffly upright, sword-like leaves, which are dramatically striped with creamy-white or silvery variegation against a green background. In early to mid-summer, foliage is topped with tall stems bearing single, flat-profile flowers of rich, dark purple, each petal marked with a small, bright golden yellow signal. The dark, saturated color of the blooms creates a stunning contrast with the luminous, pale-striped leaves, ensuring 'Variegata' provides eye-catching color and texture in the landscape even before and long after the bloom season.
