LADY IN RED FERN -
24-30 Inches Tall 24-30 Inches Wide--
Athyrium filix-femina 'Lady in Red' is a sophisticated cultivar of the native Northern Lady Fern, prized for its exceptional color contrast. While the lacy, fine-textured fronds are a bright, refreshing green, the central stems (stipes) mature into a deep, brilliant burgundy-red. This color contrast becomes more pronounced as the plant matures, usually after its first couple of seasons in the garden. The upright, arching habit of the fronds allows the red stems to be seen clearly, adding a unique vertical interest and a pop of unexpected color to the typical greenery of a shade garden.
'Lady in Red' is happiest in a spot that provides part to full shade, though it can handle a small amount of morning sun if the moisture levels are high enough. It thrives in rich, loamy soil that is consistently moist but well-drained. To truly highlight 'Lady in Red' characteristics, ensure it is planted in an area sheltered from strong winds, which can damage the delicate pinnae. Adding a layer of organic mulch will help retain the moisture it craves and mimic the woodland floor it naturally inhabits. As it goes dormant in late autumn, it is best to leave the old fronds in place to protect the crown, then trim them away in early spring just as the new, red-stemmed fiddleheads begin to emerge.
