GIANT SACATON -

Sporobolus wrightii, commonly known as Giant Sacaton, is a majestic and architectural native grass that brings a powerful, upright presence to the landscape. This "big brother" to Prairie Dropseed is prized for its massive, fountain-like habit of arching, grey-green blades that can reach a height of 3 to 5 feet on their own. In late summer, sturdy flower stalks rise well above the foliage to a total height of 6 to 7 feet, topped with airy, bronzy-gold plumes that shimmer in the sunlight.
As the season transitions into autumn and winter, the entire plant takes on a brilliant, glowing golden-bronze hue. Giant Sacaton is exceptionally structural, maintaining its upright form and providing a bold, sculptural element in the garden even under a light dusting of snow. The dense, clumping habit also serves as an excellent nesting site and cover for local songbirds and beneficial insects.
For the most impressive size and strongest winter stems, plant Sporobolus wrightii in a location that receives full sun. It is an incredibly rugged and drought-tolerant grass that is native to the floodplains and rocky slopes of the Southwest, making it uniquely adapted to handle both periodic flooding and extreme drought.
