BREAKERS BEARDED IRIS -
30-36 Inches Tall 18-24 Inches Wide--
The Iris germanica 'Breakers' is more commonly known as 'Breakers' Bearded Iris. It is popular for its striking, uniform blue coloration, often described as the "truest blue" in its class. 'Breakers' features large, fragrant flowers with effervescent, heavily ruffled, and wavy petals, giving them a billowy appearance in the garden. The strong, well-branched stalks, which typically rise to about 3 feet in height, can hold as many as eight to ten buds, leading to a profuse display of color during its mid-to-late spring blooming season. Adding to its appeal, 'Breakers' is a reliable rebloomer, often producing a second flush of its soothing blue blooms later in the fall. The plant's upright growth habit is complemented by sword-like, gray-green foliage that maintains interest throughout the growing season.
Like all Tall Bearded Irises, 'Breakers' is relatively easy to care for, thriving in full sun and requiring well-drained soil to prevent rhizome rot—a common issue if the plant sits in consistently wet conditions. It is notably hardy across a wide range of climates, typically flourishing in USDA Zones 3 through 9, and possesses natural resistance to both deer and rabbits. For optimal health and a continuous bloom cycle, it is recommended to plant the rhizomes at or slightly above the soil surface and to divide the clumps every three to four years when they become overcrowded.
