BLUE FESCUE GRASS -
9-12 Inches Tall 18-24 Inches Wide--
Festuca glauca 'Elijah Blue', commonly known as Elijah Blue Fescue, is one of the most popular and vibrant of the ornamental blue fescues. This cool-season grass forms a tidy, spherical mound of very fine, needle-like blades that maintain a striking soft powdery-blue color throughout the year. Reaching a compact height and width of only 9 to 12 inches, it is a great choice for rock gardens, modern geometric plantings, or as a cooling edge for sunny pathways. In early summer, it produces thin, upright flower spikes that emerge wheat-colored and eventually fade to a light tan, though many gardeners prefer to snip these off to keep the focus on the dense, colorful tuft of foliage.
Caring for 'Elijah Blue' is remarkably easy, provided it is given the "lean and dry" conditions it craves. It performs best in full sun, which ensures the blue intensity of the blades remains vivid; in too much shade, the plant may turn a duller green and lose its tight, mounded shape. This grass requires well-drained soil and is highly drought-tolerant once established, making it a perfect candidate for xeriscaping or sandy coastal areas. Because it is a short-lived perennial, it benefits from being divided every few years to maintain its vigor. Maintenance is simple. Instead of cutting it to the ground, just "comb" through the clump in early spring to remove dead blades or lightly trim the tips to refresh the mound for the new growing season.
