PLUMBAGO -
9-12 Inches Tall 18-24 Inches Wide--
Ceratostigma plumbaginoides, commonly known as Hardy Blue Plumbago or Leadwort, is a prized groundcover known for its exceptional late-season interest and "true blue" flowers. It forms a low, spreading mat of glossy green, spoon-shaped leaves that typically reaches 9 to 12 inches in height. Starting in mid-summer and continuing until the first frost, it produces clusters of brilliant, cobalt-blue blossoms that resemble those of the tropical Plumbago. As autumn arrives, its foliage undergoes a dramatic transformation, turning a stunning shade of bronzy-red or burgundy, which provides a vivid backdrop for the final blue flowers of the season.
Plumbago is a tough and adaptable performer that is perfect for filling in gaps between larger shrubs or as a front-of-border accent. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil, though it is remarkably drought-tolerant once it has established its root system. One characteristic to keep in mind is that it is often late to emerge in the spring, so it is helpful to interplant it with spring-blooming bulbs like daffodils or tulips. To keep the patch looking tidy, simply cut the woody stems back to the ground in late winter or early spring before the new growth begins to appear.
