DIXIE WOOD FERN -
3-4 Feet Tall 2-3 Feet Wide--
Dryopteris australis, commonly known as the Dixie Wood Fern, is a tall, stately hybrid that brings a powerful architectural presence to the shade garden. A natural cross between the Log Fern and the Southern Wood Fern, it is one of the most vigorous and impressive ferns for temperate climates. It features large, upright, dark green fronds that can easily reach heights of 3 to 4 feet, creating a bold vertical accent. Unlike many other ferns that have a spreading habit, Dixie Wood Fern grows in a tidy, vase-shaped clump, making it an excellent choice for the back of a border or for creating a lush, forest-like screen.
To support its large stature, Dryopteris australis should be planted in partial to full shade in a spot with plenty of vertical room. It is remarkably adaptable and thrives in moist, rich, and well-drained soil, but it is also notably more tolerant of heat and humidity than many other Dryopteris species. While it prefers consistent moisture, once it is well-established, it can handle occasional dry spells better than its more delicate relatives. In warmer zones, it can remain nearly evergreen, providing structure and color throughout the winter months. To keep the fronds looking their best, provide a location protected from heavy winds and apply a layer of organic mulch to maintain the cool root environment it loves.
