FIREFLY ORIENTAL SPRUCE -
6-7 Feet Tall 4 Feet Wide--
Picea orientalis 'Firefly' is a striking dwarf cultivar of the Oriental Spruce, prized for its luminous, golden-yellow foliage that provides a nice glow in the landscape year-round. 'Firefly' maintains a tidy, upright pyramidal habit, growing slowly to reach about 6 feet in height and 4 feet in width over a decade. The needles are notably short, blunt, and fine-textured, emerging a brilliant gold in the spring before softening to a chartreuse-gold that stands out beautifully against the darker green interior branches. Its compact stature and architectural form make it an ideal specimen for smaller urban gardens, rock gardens, or as a vibrant vertical accent in a mixed border.
To ensure the best color and health, 'Firefly' Spruce should be planted in a location that receives full sun to partial shade. In cooler climates, full sun is necessary to maintain its intense yellow pigment, but in areas with intense summer heat, a spot with dappled afternoon shade is preferred to prevent the needles from scorching. It performs best in well-drained, slightly acidic soil and requires regular watering during its first few growing seasons to establish a deep root system. Once mature, it is quite hardy and drought tolerant. Because of its naturally symmetrical growth and slow pace, it requires little to no pruning, making it an exceptionally low-maintenance choice for long-term structure.
