OSTRYA VIRGINIANA
Grower Notes:
The Eastern Hop Hornbeam is a deciduous, slender, understory shade tree with a rounded crown. It can grow to 25-40 feet tall with a 20 foot spread. It features oval, dark green leaves that turn yellow in early fall. Female catkins are followed by clusters of seedpods that resemble the fruit of hops, thus the common name.
The Eastern Hop Hornbeam is easy to grow and thrives in part sun in average, well-drained soils. It is tolerate of drought and clay soils, once established.
