CALYCANTHUS FLORIDUS
Grower Notes:
Calycanthus floridus is commonly referred to as Carolina Allspice, Hairy Allspice or Carolina Sweetshrub. It is a unique shrub that features large, dark maroon flowers at the end of large leafy branchlets. It has a wonderful strawberry-like fragrance when stems and leaves are crushed. It has a dense, rounded, suckering habit and grows 6-7 feet tall and wide. Flowers give way to urn-shaped fruit (seed capsules) in fall that persist in winter. They give off a pleasant spicy aroma.
Carolina Allspice enjoys full to part sun with humus-rich, moderately moist, well-drained soil. Ideal near living areas where its pleasant aroma can be enjoyed. Great as fresh cut flowers too!
