  • DRYOPTERIS ERY BRILLIANCE
BRILLIANCE AUTUMN FERN -

18-24 Inches Tall 24-30 Inches Wide--

Dryopteris erythrosora 'Brilliance', commonly known as the Autumn Fern, is a spectacular evergreen (or semi-evergreen) variety celebrated for its dynamic, color-shifting foliage. Unlike most ferns that emerge green, the young fronds of 'Brilliance' unfurl in a vivid coppery-orange to salmon-pink hue, providing a stunning contrast against the mature, glossy deep green fronds. In fall, 'Brilliance' often takes on a bronzed appearance, and the bright red spore cases (sori) on the undersides of the leaves add an extra layer of seasonal interest. It maintains a tidy, vase-shaped habit, making it a reliable and colorful choice for year-round structure.

For the best color display, Autumn Fern should be planted in partial to full shade, though it is remarkably resilient and can handle a bit more morning sun than other species, which often intensifies its orange tones. It thrives in moist, acidic, and well-drained soil that has been enriched with organic matter. 'Brilliance' is particularly valued for being quite drought-tolerant once established, making it a "tough-as-nails" option for gardeners who need a low-maintenance but beautiful plant. To keep it looking pristine, simply trim away any tattered fronds in late winter or early spring just before the new, colorful fiddleheads begin to emerge.
