OSTRICH FERN -
3-4 Feet Tall 3 Feet Wide--
Matteuccia struthiopteris is a stately North American native prized for its architectural grandeur and feathery, vibrant green plumes. The sterile fronds emerge as tightly curled "fiddleheads" - a seasonal delicacy - before unfurling into massive, deeply divided leaves that can reach heights of 3 to 4 feet. These fronds grow in a perfect vase-like arrangement from a central crown, providing a lush, forest-floor aesthetic that is ideal for large-scale shade gardens or naturalized woodland settings.
Matteuccia struthiopteris is exceptionally vigorous and spreads via underground runners to form dense colonies, making it a "workhorse" for filling expansive areas or stabilizing moist slopes. It thrives in partial to full shade and demands consistently moist, humus-rich soil, though it can even tolerate seasonally wet or boggy conditions. While the green foliage withers after the first hard frost, it produces separate, stiff, dark-brown fertile fronds in the center of the clump that remain standing throughout the winter, offering striking structural interest against the snow.
