Thymus praecox 'Coccineus', commonly known as Red Creeping Thyme, is an exceptional low-growing, mat-forming perennial that serves as one of the most popular groundcovers for sunny landscapes. This evergreen variety creates a dense, carpet-like cushion of tiny, aromatic, dark green leaves that release a pleasant herbal scent when brushed or stepped upon. In early to mid-summer, its foliage is almost entirely obscured by a profusion of tiny, tubular, carmine-red to deep pink flowers. Its prostrate growth habit and fine texture make it an invaluable tool for adding soft, living color to the smallest of spaces, effectively suppressing weeds while providing a vibrant floral display.

To achieve the best results, Red Creeping Thyme should be planted in full sun and very well-drained soil. It is remarkably drought-tolerant once established and thrives in lean or rocky soils where other plants might struggle; however, it will not tolerate "wet feet" or standing water, which can lead to root rot.
