Sedum spurium 'Dragon's Blood' (also known as 'Schorbuser Blut') is a classic, high-performance groundcover that brings intense color and rugged durability to the garden. This semi-evergreen selection features small, succulent, rounded leaves with toothed edges that form a dense, low-growing mat only 3 to 6 inches tall. The foliage is a rich green with dark red margins in the spring and summer, deepening to a brilliant, dark wine-red in the autumn and winter. In mid-to-late summer, 'Dragon's Blood' is nearly covered in flat-topped clusters of star-shaped, deep pink to ruby-red flowers that are a favorite for pollinators.
For the most intense red foliage and the tightest growth habit, plant 'Dragon's Blood' in a location that receives full sun. It is an exceptionally hardy and drought-tolerant perennial that thrives in average to poor, well-drained soil; it is particularly well-suited for rocky or sandy areas where other plants might struggle.
