ALLEGRO ORIENTAL POPPY -

Papaver orientale 'Allegro' is a compact, dwarf version of the classic Oriental poppy, delivering high-impact color in a more manageable size. It produces large, 4-to-6-inch cup-shaped flowers with crepe-papery petals in a brilliant orange-red (tomato-orange), each marked with a dark purple or black blotch at the base. These fiery blooms emerge in late spring to early summer on sturdy stems that typically reach only 15 to 18 inches tall, making 'Allegro' much less prone to flopping than its taller relatives.
While the flowers are visually dazzling, they are not known for fragrance; their appeal is purely architectural and chromatic. 'Allegro' Poppy features a basal mound of deeply lobed, thistle-like, silvery-green foliage that is covered in fine, bristly hairs. Gardeners should note that like most Oriental poppies, 'Allegro' goes dormant and disappears shortly after flowering in the heat of summer. It is best to interplant it with late-season perennials like Russian Sage or Coreopsis to fill the temporary "hole" left in the garden until its new foliage re-emerges in the cooler autumn air.
