VARIEGATED MAIDEN GRASS -
4-5 Feet Tall 2-3 Feet Wide--
Miscanthus sinensis 'Morning Light' is often described as the most elegant and refined of all the Maiden Grasses. A sport of the classic 'Gracillimus', it features exceptionally fine, needle-like blades that are edged in a crisp, shimmering white. From a distance, this variegation gives the entire plant a silvery-white, ethereal glow - as if it's constantly caught in the soft light of dawn. It forms a stately, upright-to-arching fountain that typically reaches 4 to 5 feet tall. Because of its vertical habit and luminous color, it is a favorite for brightening up dark corners of the landscape or serving as a sophisticated "shimmering" backdrop for colorful perennials.
Caring for 'Morning Light' is a breeze, as it is a tough-as-nails perennial that maintains its "good looks" even in heat and humidity. It performs most brilliantly in full sun, which is vital to keep its slender stems upright; in too much shade, it tends to lean or "flop" in search of light. It is remarkably drought-tolerant once established and can handle a variety of soil conditions, including clay and salty coastal air. Unlike some other Miscanthus, 'Morning Light' is a very late bloomer (if it blooms at all in shorter seasons), occasionally producing tiny reddish-bronze plumes in late autumn. Maintenance is a simple once-a-year task: in late winter or very early spring, cut the entire clump back to about 6 inches from the ground.
