BIG BLUE LILYTURF -
15-18 Inches Tall 18-24 Inches Wide--
Liriope muscari 'Big Blue', commonly known as Big Blue Lilyturf, is a versatile and nearly indestructible evergreen perennial that bridges the gap between a grass and a flowering plant. It forms a dense, arching mound of leathery, strap-like dark green foliage that typically grows 15 to 18 inches tall and 18-24 inches wide. Unlike some other Liriope varieties that spread aggressively by underground runners, 'Big Blue' is a clumping cultivar, making it an excellent choice for tidy borders, mass groundcovers, or erosion control on slopes. In late summer, it produces striking, upright spikes of deep lavender-purple flowers that resemble grape hyacinths, followed by attractive black berries that persist into the winter.
Caring for 'Big Blue' is remarkably easy, as it is famously tolerant of a wide range of "difficult" garden conditions. It thrives in full sun to full shade, though it generally produces more vibrant purple blooms when it receives at least a few hours of filtered light. This plant is highly drought-tolerant once established and can handle various soil types, including heavy clay, provided it isn't sitting in stagnant water. Maintenance is minimal: in late winter or very early spring, simply mow or shear the foliage back to about 2-3 inches from the ground. This "haircut" removes the battered winter growth and allows a fresh, lush crown of emerald-green blades to emerge cleanly for the new season.
