GHOST FERN -

24-30 Inches Tall 18-24 Inches Wide--

Athyrium 'Ghost' is a spectacular sterile hybrid, a cross between the Japanese Painted Fern and the Southern Lady Fern. It earned its name from the ethereal, silvery-white sheen that blankets its fronds, making the plant appear as though it is glowing in the dark recesses of a shade garden. The growth habit is more upright and rigid than many other Athyrium varieties, with the silvery foliage providing a sharp contrast against dark purple or burgundy stems. As the season progresses, the intense silver often transitions to a soft grayish-green, but the plant maintains its luminous quality, especially when planted against a backdrop of dark-leaved heucheras or deep green hostas.

For the best color, 'Ghost' should be situated in a spot with partial shade, as a small amount of morning sun actually helps intensify the silvery-white pigments. It thrives in rich, moist, well-drained soil that has been amended with plenty of organic matter. While 'Ghost' is notably more drought-tolerant than many of its relatives once established, it still performs best with regular watering during dry spells to prevent the delicate tips of the fronds from browning. Providing a sheltered location will protect its architectural form from wind damage, and a light application of mulch will help keep the root zone cool and damp throughout the growing season.
