It forms a dense, compact, upright mound, typically reaching 2 to 3 feet in height, which resists the flopping habit commonly seen in other Vernonia species. In late summer and early autumn, it produces clusters of deep purple, tubular flowers that act as powerful magnets for late-season pollinators, including monarchs and native bees.
