PENNSYLVANIA SEDGE GRASS -
6-9 Inches Tall 12-18 Inches Wide--
Carex pensylvanica, commonly known as Pennsylvania Sedge or Oak Sedge, is a delicate and versatile native perennial that serves as an excellent eco-friendly alternative to traditional turf grass. Unlike many ornamental sedges that grow in distinct clumps, Pennsylvania Sedge spreads slowly via rhizomes to form a soft, feathery groundcover that typically reaches only 6 to 9 inches in height. Its fine-textured, bright green blades have a graceful, weeping habit that creates a "flowing" effect in the landscape. In late spring, it produces tiny, inconspicuous yellowish flower spikes, but it is primarily prized for its ability to create a lush, low-maintenance carpet in challenging, shaded environments where typical grasses struggle to survive.
Caring for Pennsylvania Sedge is remarkably simple, as it is one of the most shade-tolerant and "tough" sedges available for North American gardens. It thrives in partial to full shade and is particularly well-suited for the dry, dappled light found under the canopy of large deciduous trees. While it prefers loose, well-drained soil, it is impressively drought-tolerant once established and can handle a variety of soil types, including sandy or rocky ground.
