BLUE OAT GRASS -
24-30 Inches Tall 2-3 Feet Wide--
Helictotrichon sempervirens, commonly known as Blue Oat Grass, is a classic cool-season ornamental grass celebrated for its refined, architectural silhouette and steely-blue color. It forms a dense, porcupine-like mound of stiff, semi-evergreen blades that typically reaches about 2 feet tall and wide. In early to mid-summer, it sends up elegant, arching stems topped with airy, oat-like flower spikes that emerge with a blue-green tint and mature into a shimmering translucent tan. Because of its perfectly symmetrical "fountain" shape and metallic hue, it is a staple in Mediterranean gardens, rockeries, and modern landscapes where a clean, structural element is needed.
Caring for Blue Oat Grass is straightforward, provided it is planted in a spot that mimics its native alpine habitat. it thrives in full sun and requires well-drained soil to prevent crown rot; it is particularly sensitive to "wet feet" during the winter months. Once established, it is remarkably drought-tolerant and deer-resistant, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance or xeriscaped beds. Because it is semi-evergreen, you should avoid cutting the entire plant back to the ground; instead, simply "comb" through the mound in early spring with gloved hands or a small rake to remove old, brown blades and refresh the plant for new growth.
