  • PENSTEMON DIGITALIS
BEARDTONGUE -

3-4 Feet Tall 15-18 Inches Wide--

Penstemon digitalis, commonly known as Foxglove Beardtongue, is a versatile North American native perennial prized for its upright, architectural form and ecological value. In late spring to early summer, it sends up sturdy, bloom-heavy stalks reaching up to 36-42 inches tall, topped with clusters of tubular, creamy white to pale pink flowers. These bell-shaped blooms feature delicate purple nectar guides inside the throat, which serve as a "landing strip" for bumblebees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Unlike many ornamental hybrids, the straight species features attractive, lance-shaped green foliage that remains lush throughout the growing season.

Penstemon digitalis is one of the most adaptable and easy-to-grow members of the Penstemon genus, thriving in USDA zones 4-8. While most beardtongues demand gravelly, desert-like soil, P. digitalis is notably tolerant of clay, moist conditions, and even partial shade, though it flowers best in full sun. It is a fantastic "bridge" plant for the garden, blooming after the early spring bulbs but before the heat of mid-summer perennials. Because it is deer and rabbit resistant and handles varying soil types with ease, it is a top choice for naturalized meadows, pollinator gardens, and traditional perennial borders alike.
