  • ATHYRIUM NIP REGAL RED
REGAL RED JAPANESE PAINTED FERN -

15-18 Inches Tall 18-24 Inches Wide--

Athyrium niponicum 'Regal Red' is widely considered one of the most intensely colored selections of the Japanese Painted Fern group. It is distinguished by its dramatic, dark violet-red interior stems and midribs that provide a stark, "regal" contrast against the outer edges of the fronds, which are a shimmering silver with a subtle touch of olive green. The pinnules (leaflets) are often slightly twisted or ruffled, adding a sense of depth and movement to its appearance. It is slightly more upright than the standard 'Pictum', making its deep red "heart" even more visible in the landscape.

To maintain the richness of its red tones, 'Regal Red' performs best in partial shade; while it needs protection from the afternoon heat, a few hours of filtered morning light will help the burgundy pigments pop. It thrives in moist, acidic soil that is rich in organic debris like leaf mold or well-rotted compost. Like its cousins, it is a deciduous fern that benefits from being left undisturbed in the winter, with the old fronds cleared only when new growth appears in late spring. Consistent moisture is essential to prevent the silver edges from crisping, so a regular watering schedule and a layer of mulch are recommended to keep this colorful specimen looking its best.
