VARIEGATED SWEET FLAG -
9-12 Inches Tall 15-18 Inches Wide--
Acorus gramineus 'Variegatus', commonly known as Variegated Japanese Sweet Flag, is a versatile, grass-like perennial cherished for its elegant, fan-shaped clusters of foliage. Unlike the solid gold 'Ogon', this selection features striking creamy-white and deep green stripes that run the length of each blade, providing a crisp, cool aesthetic to the landscape. Reaching a modest height of 9 to 12 inches, it grows in a slow-spreading, tufted habit that makes it an excellent choice for softening the edges of stone paths, filling in gaps between pond rocks, or acting as a bright groundcover in shaded woodland gardens. When the leaves are crushed or stepped upon, they release a pleasant, citrus-like scent, adding a sensory dimension to its visual appeal.
To keep Variegated Sweet Flag looking its best, it should be planted in partial to full shade, as the white portions of the leaves are susceptible to scorching in intense, direct sunlight. This plant is a "water lover" and is happiest in consistently moist to boggy soils; it can even thrive in up to an inch of standing water, making it perfect for rain gardens or the margins of a water feature. If the soil is allowed to dry out, the tips of the variegated blades will quickly turn brown and brittle.
