NOVA JAPANESE YEW -
6-7 Feet Tall 3 Feet Wide--
Taxus cuspidata 'Nova' is a refined selection of the Japanese Yew and highly regarded for its vigorous growth and exceptionally tidy, upright habit. 'Nova' features a dense, columnar to pyramidal form adorned with dark, forest-green needles that are slightly broader and more leathery than those of the English Yew. 'Nova' is particularly valued for its superior winter hardiness and its ability to maintain its deep green luster without bronzing, even in harsh, wind-exposed northern climates.
Nova Japanese Yew is very adaptable regarding soil pH and urban pollution. It thrives in full sun to part shade and requires well-drained soil; it will struggle in heavy, waterlogged clay. One of its greatest strengths is its response to pruning; it can be sheared into crisp, geometric shapes or allowed to grow naturally into a tall, stately screen. It is ideal for privacy hedges, formal topiary, or as a dark, vertical anchor at the corners of a home's foundation. Its density also makes it an excellent windbreak. Similar to other yews, 'Nova' produces bright red, berry-like fruits called arils. While the fleshy part is technically edible to birds, the seed inside is highly toxic, so use caution in areas frequented by small children or pets.
