WHIP IT GOOD ARBORVITAE -
4-5 Feet Tall 4-5 Feet Wide--
Thuja occidentalis 'Whip It Good' is an eye-catching, weeping dwarf Eastern Arborvitae cultivar valued for its unusual thread-like foliage and highly architectural form. Growing slowly to a mature height of 4 to 5 feet with an equal spread, it produces thin, cord-like, pendulous branchlets that drape loosely from a central framework, giving the plant a distinctive shaggy or "whipped" texture. The threadleaf foliage emerges a soft chartreuse-green in spring before aging to a deep emerald green, often taking on warm bronze-amber tones in harsh winter conditions. Its compact size and weeping habit make it an exceptional focal point for rock gardens, mixed conifer borders, foundation beds, or container plantings where its weeping structure can be highlighted.
Caring for 'Whip It Good' Arborvitae centers on providing consistent root moisture and full sun exposure (at least 6 hours of direct light daily) to keep its dense, cord-like foliage vibrant and healthy. It thrives in fertile, moist, organically rich soils that drain freely, with a preference for slightly acidic to neutral pH levels; heavy, wet, standing water should be avoided to prevent root rot. Hardy in USDA Zones 3 through 8, it tolerates cold northern winters well, though a 2- to 3-inch layer of organic mulch around the root zone helps insulate roots and conserve soil moisture during summer heat.
