VINHO VERDE® WEIGELA

Weigela florida 'SMNWFBGV' PP34297 Proven Winners® Color Choice® Vinho Verde® is more commonly referred to as Vinho Verde® Weigela. It is a unique and highly sought-after deciduous shrub, celebrated primarily for its extraordinary foliage and tidy habit. Unlike many Weigelas prized for their profuse flowers, this Proven Winners® Color Choice® selection puts on a continuous show with its foliage. Each lime-green leaf is artfully framed by a dramatic, bold black margin, creating a crisp and refreshing effect, much like the Portuguese wine for which it is named. An interesting and desirable characteristic of Vinho Verde® is that when it occasionally reverts, it does so to an all-black form, which will not outgrow the plant and can be left for added color or easily pruned out. While the foliage is the main attraction, it does produce charming reddish-pink flowers in late spring and early summer on old wood, which adds a subtle layer of beauty and attracts hummingbirds.

Vinho Verde® Weigela is easy to care for and thrives in full sun (at least six hours of direct sunlight per day). It adapts well to a range of soil types, including clay, as long as the soil is rich, evenly moist, and well-drained. It makes it an ideal choice for mixed borders, where its unique color can provide a bold anchor, as a tidy groundcover, or for lining walkways and garden beds.
