MYRTLE

Vinca minor, frequently referred to as Common Periwinkle or Creeping Myrtle, is a quintessential evergreen groundcover valued for its ability to form a dense, low-growing carpet in challenging garden environments. It features small, glossy, dark green leaves that maintain their color and luster throughout the entire year, even in the depths of winter. In early spring, it is dotted with charming, five-petaled flowers that are traditionally a soft lavender-blue, though cultivars with white or purple blooms also exist. Its trailing stems spread efficiently by rooting at the nodes, creating a thick mat that is excellent for suppressing weeds and providing a uniform green base for the landscape.

The ideal spot for Vinca minor is in partial to full shade, particularly in areas where grass has difficulty growing due to a lack of sunlight. It is highly adaptable to various soil types but performs best in moist, fertile, and well-drained earth. While it can tolerate some morning sun, total protection from the intense afternoon heat is necessary to prevent the foliage from yellowing. Once the root system is established, it is remarkably drought-tolerant and requires very little maintenance other than occasional trimming to keep it within its intended boundaries. It is a perfect choice for planting on shaded hillsides, under large trees, or along woodland paths where a reliable and attractive evergreen cover is desired.

Planting Tips ⓘ

To help Vinca minor settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining, average garden soil in a location with partial shade to full sun. Vinca minor is highly adaptable and drought-tolerant once established. It is a vigorous, mat-forming, evergreen groundcover that spreads rapidly; periodic pruning or edging is necessary to keep it contained within the desired planting area. Avoid planting in waterlogged soils, which can lead to crown rot.
