CHARLES JOLY COMMON LILAC

Syringa vulgaris 'Charles Joly' is commonly referred to as Charles Joly Lilac. It is a French Hybrid variety that features an upright, open-branched habit with smaller panicles of purple buds that open to fragrant, magenta double flowers in mid May.

Charles Joly Common Lilac thrives in cooler summer climates. It enjoys full sun in rich, fertile, evenly moist, well-drained soils. Flowers are formed on previous season's growth. It is ideal as a specimen planting, foundations or borders.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: select a planting location with full sun and fertile, well-draining soil to support its heavy clusters of deep magenta-purple double flowers. This variety is prized for its intense fragrance, so site it near walkways or patios where the scent can be enjoyed. Provide regular watering throughout the first season and feed with a balanced fertilizer in early spring before new growth breaks. To ensure a prolific display next year, do not prune in late winter or early spring; any structural pruning must be finished immediately after the flowers fade in late spring.
