QUERCUS SHUMARDII
Grower Notes:

Quercus shumardii is commonly referred to as the Shumard Oak. This native, medium sized, deciduous tree is pyramidal when young, maturing to a broad, more open crown, when it matures. Typically a moderately fast grower with shiny, dark green leaves with a late fall color of dark red.

Shumard Oak's fruits are small acorns which are not produced until the tree has reached the age of 25 years. Acorns are cherished by wildlife such as squirrels and deer.

Shumard Oak thrives in full sun in moist locations in bottomlands and lowlands, including sites along streams and lakes, valleys and along the swamp edge.

This is a durable and long-lived tree that does well in a wide range of soils. It is tolerant of urban conditions and makes a nice substitute for the Scarlet Oak.
