GEM BOX® INKBERRY

Ilex glabra 'SMNIGAB17' PP27554 Proven Winners® Color Choice® Gem Box® is commonly referred to as Gem Box® Inkberry Holly. It is noteworthy for its dwarf, dense, ball-shaped habit that resembles a boxwood rather than an inkberry. This Proven Winners® Color Choice® female Inkberry features small, evergreen leaves with attractive red tips in spring. Its branching is to the ground so no bare spots! The perfect pollinator for Gem Box® or Strong Box® is Ilex glabra Squeeze Box®. Very small berries will appear only if another Ilex glabra is in the area such as the Strong Box®.

Gem Box® Inkberry Holly thrives in full sun to partial shade in rich, acidic, evenly moist, well-drained soil. It is slow-growing and disease resistant and makes a great Boxwood substitute. Ideal for mixed shrub borders, small gardens or containers.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in fertile, acidic, and well-draining soil, selecting a location that ranges from full sun to partial shade depending on the specific cultivar. These versatile shrubs generally prefer consistent moisture, especially during the first growing season to establish strong root systems, and they benefit from protection against harsh, drying winds. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead wood or to shape the plant, which encourages dense, healthy foliage and helps maintain a manageable size. Apply a layer of organic mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and maintain soil acidity, taking care to keep the material a few inches away from the crown to prevent stem rot.
