NEXT GENERATION® RED SENSATION BIGLEAF HYDRANGEA

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Red Sensation' PP18197 is commonly referred to as Next Generation® Red Sensation Hydrangea. This compact rebloomer grows to only 2-3 feet tall with a spread of 3-5 feet. It features disease resistant, green foliage with large, light red mophead flowers on sturdy, dark red stems. It flowers from midsummer through fall and flowers mature to lavender as the season progresses. Flower color is dependent on soil pH. Pink to red color occurs in more alkaline soils while vivid blues and lavenders occur in more acidic soils. The addition of aluminum sulfate to the soil will encourage lavender and blue colors and adding lime will produce pink flowers.

Next Generation® Red Sensation Hydrangea blooms on both old and new wood and will benefit from some protection from winds or cold temperatures that may damage flower buds. It thrives in part sun in rich, fertile, evenly moist, well-drained soils.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining, rich soil protected from the hot afternoon sun. For pink and blue Hydrangea macrophylla varieties, bloom color is pH-dependent; keep soil slightly acidic for blue tones or adjust toward neutral for pink. White varieties remain stable regardless of pH. Water consistently to maintain soil moisture, as this variety is sensitive to drying out. Mulch around the base to keep roots cool and moist.
