BLACK DRAGON JAPANESE CEDAR

Cryptomeria japonica 'Black Dragon' is commonly referred to as Black Dragon Japanese Cedar. It is a dramatic, broadly upright evergreen selection that is fast-growing when young, then slows its growth near 4-6' tall. It features swirling branches of light green new growth that deepens to very dark green - almost black in winter.

Black Dragon Japanese Cedar thrives in partial sun in organically rich, evenly moist, well-drained soils. Unlike other cultivars, this selection will not turn brown in winter, but instead retain its deep greenish-black color through the winter months. It is a very popular dwarf conifer and is especially useful in Asian or formal English themed gardens.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining acidic soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune annually to maintain shape and promote healthy growth.
