BAPTISIA AUSTRALIS
Grower Notes:
Baptisia Australis is commonly referred to as Blue Wild Indigo or Blue False Indigo. This robust native perennial features an upright shrubby habit with showy indigo-blue flowers in spring carried on terminal spikes up to 12 inches long. Mounding foliage is bluish-green and divided into three clover-like leaflets. Flowers give way to inflated seed pods which turn black when ripe. The seeds rattle in the inflated pods and were quite popular, being used as rattles for children's amusement. In fall the foliage turns silvery-gray and can be seen tumbling in the wind on windy days.
Blue Wild Indigo thrives in full sun in average, well-draining soils. It is tolerate to drought and poor soils once established. It is ideal for cottage gardens, meadows and other sunny, naturalized settings.
