GROWER NOTES: >
The Oxydendrum arboreum, commonly known as Sourwood, Lily of the Valley Tree or Sorrel Tree, is a small, deciduous, understory tree that grows 20-25 feet tall and spreads close to 20 feet. Slightly fragrant, Lily of the Valley-like white flowers bloom on slender, drooping panicles in early summer. Finely-toothed, glossy green leaves turn an attractive crimson red in fall. Leaves have a very sour taste, hence the common name. The Bark is reddish-brown with vertical furrows.
Sourwood enjoys full sun to part shade and acidic, peaty, moist, well-drained soils. It does not tolerate salt or pollution.
