GROWER NOTES: >
Quercus rubra is commonly referred to as the Red Oak. This stately native deciduous tree has a rounded and broad-spreading often irregular crown. It has been very important to the Ohio timber industry, providing hardwood used in beams, railroad ties, furniture, flooring, and more.
It is a popular shade tree that typically grows at a moderately fast rate with dark green foliage that turns deep red in autumn. Fruits are acorns which fall in September and October, typically earlier in the season than most other oaks. (Note that a steady supply of acorns may not occur before this tree reaches 40 years old.) The Red Oak's bark is smooth and light gray when young, maturing to a darker gray with shiny, flattened ridges resembling ski tracks.
