Tiarella 'Sugar and Spice' is a fantastic cultivar of Foamflower known for its highly decorative, shiny foliage. The leaves are deeply incised and feature a prominent, dark purple-to-maroon central marking along the veins, which creates a striking contrast against the glossy, bright green background. In mid-to-late spring, it sends up numerous racemes of frothy, light pink-to-white flowers that hover above the foliage like tiny, fragrant stars. 'Sugar and Spice' has a clumping habit and maintains its attractive, evergreen-to-semi-evergreen mound throughout its growing season, providing year-round interest that few other shade plants can match.
For optimal performance, 'Sugar and Spice' prefers part shade to full shade and thrives in moist, well-drained, organic-rich soil. It is an ideal choice for woodland borders, shaded rock gardens, or as a sophisticated groundcover in container plantings. While it is relatively tolerant of various soil conditions, it does best when kept consistently moist, especially during hot, dry spells. It is notably deer-resistant and requires very little maintenance beyond removing dead flower spikes after they have faded.
