SCIADOPITYS VER WINTER GREEN
Grower Notes:
The Sciadopitys verticillata 'Winter Green' is commonly referred to as the Winter Green Japanese Umbrella Pine or Parasol Fir. The genus name, Sciadopitys, is Greek in origin. Skias means 'umbrella' and pitys means 'fir' or 'pine'. This slow-growing, fairly narrow, pyramidal, evergreen conifer is an improved cultivar with size and shape similar to the species. It features long, dark green pine-like needles arranged in whorls on the branches that stay green through winter. Its tufted needles form in an upward manner looking much like an umbrella. Typical growth in most areas is about 7 inches per year, eventually maturing to 20 feet in cultivation.
The refined Umbrella Pine enjoys moist, rich, acidic, well-drained soils in sun or partial shade. Shelter from harsh winter winds would be beneficial.
