VIOLET SPIDERFLOWER

Cleome hassleriana, when grown in its dedicated violet selections, brings a striking, architectural elegance and a cool, sophisticated palette to the mid-to-back border. Commonly known as the spider flower, this robust annual is famous for its large, spherical, open-faced flower clusters that bloom sequentially from the bottom up on stately stems reaching 3 to 4 feet tall. The blossoms are a rich, luminous violet-purple, featuring dramatically long, delicate stamens and seedpods that flare outward, mimicking the legs of a spider. The dark, heavily textured, palmately compound foliage creates a dense, attractive canopy that beautifully grounds the airy, floating appearance of the massive flower heads, making it an ideal choice for adding structural height and movement to the garden.

From a cultural standpoint, violet cleomes are exceptionally tough, low-maintenance annuals that perform beautifully during the hottest, most humid months of the summer. They demand a location in full sun and thrive in a wide variety of soil types, provided the ground is sharply drained, as they are highly susceptible to root issues in waterlogged earth. While they appreciate regular moisture to establish their deep root systems, mature plants are remarkably drought-tolerant and handle intense summer heat with ease.
