DURIOR DUTCHMANS PIPE

Aristolochia 'Durior' is commonly referred to as Dutchman's Pipe, Big Sarsaparilla or Wild Ginger. It is also referred to as Aristolochia macrophylla. It is a deciduous, twining woody, climbing vine that is a very vigorous, fast grower. It will create a thick green screen in a short period of time that displays large 8-10 inch, heart-shaped, dark green leaves - perfect for privacy screens along trellises and chain link fences. In late spring, small, inconspicuous, pipe-shaded, mahogany red and creamy white flowers appear and are usually not noticed as much as its dense foliage. Flowers are followed by small green cucumber-like fruit which ripen to gray or black.

Dutchman's Pipe thrives in full to partial sun in fertile, evenly moist, well-drained soils. It does not tolerate strong winds or dry soils. Fun Fact: Dutchman's Pipe plays an important role in the life of native Pipevine Swallowtail Butterfly as it is its larval host.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and promote healthy growth.
