RED SPIDER JAPANESE MAPLE
Acer palmatum 'Red Spider' is a striking specimen named for its incredibly narrow, strap-like leaf lobes that radiate out like the legs of a spider. This small, deciduous tree features an upright yet gracefully open habit, with branch tips that often curve slightly downward to create a delicate, lacy effect. In spring, its foliage emerges a vibrant cherry red, maturing to a deep burgundy or bronzy-green by mid-summer. It is a slow grower that typically reaches 12 feet in height with an 8-foot spread, making it an excellent choice for a focal point where its fine texture can be appreciated. In the fall, 'Red Spider' provides a final dramatic display as the leaves transform into a brilliant, fiery scarlet.
For best color and health, 'Red Spider' Japanese Maple thrives in a location that receives morning sun and afternoon shade. Its delicate, thin leaves are particularly susceptible to scorching in intense mid-day heat. It enjoys rich, well-drained, slightly acidic soil and requires consistent moisture. Like most Japanese Maples, it does not tolerate 'wet feet' or extreme drought.
