Clematis 'Ernest Markham' is a large deciduous climbing Clematis that features single 5-6" magenta-red flowers that have a velvety sheen and golden anthers.
Ernest Markham Clematis thrives in full to part sun (head in the sun - feet in the shade) in rich, evenly moist, well-drained soils. Afternoon shade is appreciated in hot summer climates.
This vigorous grower is a late blooming variety which blooms on new, current season's growth from July to September. Last year's stems will not bloom and can be pruned in late winter or early spring (Feb/March) to approximately 12" from the ground with two strong sets of buds on each stem. Blooms early summer and continues through fall.
